Ellesmere Island Trip July 2013
In July of 2013 I had the extraordinary opportunity to travel with Steve Siciliano's research team from the Dept of Soil Science at the University of Saskatchewan to Alexandra Fiord on Ellesmere Island. In addition to assisting with graduate research projects I had an opportunity to paint the surrounding landscapes. It turns out that in 1927, A.Y. Jackson and F. Banting visited across the bay at Bache Peninsula aboard the Beothic and painted in the same area. A cairn has been erected at Alexandra Fiord to commemorate A.Y. Jackson most northerly painting location by his friend Maurice Haycock. Living in tents I stayed up on the dolomite dome for 10 days and then for 4 days down at the old RCMP outpost that was established in 1953 at Alexandra Fiord. It was indeed a joy to experience the high arctic and try and capture a part of this wonderful creation.
