Artist Statement My journey in painting is rooted in landscapes; a plein air approach to convey a sense of place. But lately the landscape narrative has been diverted towards experimentation and play at that intersection of who I am as a forest soil scientist and visual artist. This merging of different disciplines seems to be more of a collision when the two meet to express themselves in unexpected ways. How do science and art together reveal the hidden personalities in a burnt forest or the history of a soil profile that most people ignore as dirt? Using elements of the natural earth, I try to capture an intimate relationship with the landscape by entering into it as a living canvas playing with charcoal and soil to chronicle their unique stories.
